Rules of the road - cycling in New Zealand

Cycling is more than just a mode of transport in New Zealand - It’s a way to unwind, explore stunning landscapes, improve health, and embrace sustainable living. Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or enjoying a leisurely weekend ride, knowing the rules of the road is not only helpful for you and others safety, it makes for a more enjoyable cycling experience. Here’s a quick guide to the rules of the road in NZ.

  • Cyclists are encouraged to ride as close as practicable to the left-hand side of the road for smooth traffic flow. However, you have the right to take the lane when needed for safety, such as avoiding obstacles or ensuring you're clearly visible at intersections.

  • Where cycle lanes are available, they provide a great opportunity to ride in a space designed specifically for cyclists. These lanes help keep you separate from vehicle traffic, enhancing your safety and making your journey more efficient. Cyclists can use shared paths, but it’s essential to be considerate of pedestrians. Use your bell to signal your presence and pass at a safe speed. Cycling on footpaths is generally not allowed unless explicitly permitted.

  • As a cyclist, you're part of the traffic system, and following road rules helps ensure everyone's safety. This includes stopping at red lights, giving way at intersections, and observing speed limits where they apply.

  • Wearing an approved helmet is an important safety measure for all cyclists in New Zealand. Choosing a helmet that fits well and securing it properly will help keep you safe while you ride.

  • To stay visible during low-light conditions (from dusk to dawn), it’s essential to equip your bike with a white front light and a red rear light. Being seen helps keep you and other road users safe.

  • When overtaking others, signaling clearly and ensuring there’s enough space helps create a safe and respectful environment. Likewise, vehicles passing cyclists are encouraged to leave a gap of at least 1.5 meters to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety.
